Archeology: Out of Context

Archaeology: Out of Context challenges participants to think like archaeologists—and fix a dig gone wrong. Guests will learn a brief history of archaeology and explore why context (where something is found, what it’s found with, and how it’s recorded) is just as important as the artifact itself. Then it’s time to solve the mystery: using observation and evidence, participants will piece together what happened and work to identify the artifact despite missing or mixed-up information.

This hands-on activity highlights how archaeologists use careful notes, maps, and documentation to turn objects into stories about people and the past—and what can be lost when those details aren’t recorded.

Recommended for ages 8 and up.
