About the Event

Join us for a members-only presentation with LVSNHM paleontologist Dr. Steve Rowland as he discusses his newly released publication, Occasional Paper 2. In this talk, Dr. Rowland will share the story behind a remarkable collection of Ice Age artifacts and fossils excavated in the 1990s at the Gilcrease Ranch near Floyd Lamb Park—and why this discovery matters for understanding Southern Nevada’s deep past.

Co-authored with archaeologist Dr. Amy Foulks, the paper is the first detailed study of materials that have been curated at the museum for decades but only recently analyzed and described. Unlike earlier excavations in the Las Vegas Valley that did not uncover evidence of human and Ice Age animal interaction, these artifacts provide important clues about how people may have lived alongside—and interacted with—Ice Age wildlife.
