Explore how plants can create color for textiles in this hands-on workshop with artist Xochil. Families will experiment with wax resist patterns inspired by batik, then dip their designs into natural dye baths (like hibiscus or turmeric) to reveal vibrant, nature-made color.

About the Event
Woven Throughout History: Color from Nature (Wax Resist & Natural Dye) with Xochil invites families to discover how natural materials can create beautiful color in textiles. In this workshop, participants will learn how cultures around the world have developed plant-based dyeing traditions—turning flowers, roots, and other natural sources into pigments for fabric.
After a short introduction to natural dyes, families will experiment with a simple wax resist technique inspired by traditional batik processes.
Using warm wax tools, participants will create patterns on paper or cloth, then dip their designs into prepared natural dye baths made from plant materials such as hibiscus, turmeric, or other natural sources. As the dye colors the fibers, the wax resists the pigment and reveals the pattern underneath.
Each participant will leave with their own naturally dyed artwork while learning about plant pigments, how fibers absorb color, and resist dye techniques used around the world.
