About the Event
Woven Throughout History: Stories in Cloth (Otomi-Inspired Textile Printing) with Xochil is a special Indigenous Heritage Month workshop exploring how textiles can tell stories about the natural world. Xochil is a first-generation, self-taught Chicana artist based in Las Vegas whose work blends contemporary expression with ancestral memory, cultural education, and community engagement—often drawing from Mexican
Indigenous ancestry, symbolism, and language revitalization.
In this family-friendly, hands-on workshop, participants will learn how Otomi artists from Hidalgo, Mexico use vibrant animals, plants, and patterns to represent relationships with nature. After a short introduction to textile storytelling traditions, families will print their own designs using pre-carved linocut stamps featuring animal and plant motifs inspired by Otomi imagery. Using colorful fabric paints, participants will layer prints onto a fabric square to create their own “story cloth.”
Each participant will leave with a printed textile square representing their own visual story.
Recommended for all ages.
